What it used to be, and what it is now
Yongsan Electronics Market was, for decades, one of the largest concentrated electronics retail districts in Asia, spread across several large buildings near Yongsan Station (see our Yongsan guide). Like similar electronics markets worldwide, it has shrunk considerably as online retail has taken over the price-comparison shopping it used to specialize in — but it hasn't disappeared, and specific buildings remain active.
What's still genuinely worth it
- Secondhand and used camera gear — a specific remaining strength, with dedicated vendors and genuine bargains for those who know what to look for.
- Niche and hard-to-find components — vendors serving hobbyists and repair professionals rather than general consumers.
- The browsing experience itself — even without buying, it's a distinctive, slightly faded slice of a very different Seoul shopping era compared to Gangnam's glass malls.
Who should still go
Photography and electronics enthusiasts specifically looking for secondhand gear or niche components — general visitors are better served by mainstream electronics retail elsewhere in the city if they just need a standard consumer purchase.
Tip: Bargaining is expected here more than at most mainstream Seoul retail — bring reference prices from elsewhere before negotiating on anything significant.
