What makes these different
Unlike mall-scale retail such as COEX or Lotte World Mall, Seoul's underground shopping arcades are made up of hundreds of small, independently run stalls in narrow subway-connected corridors — closer in spirit to a market than a department store, but entirely indoors and climate-controlled.
Where to find the best ones
- Express Bus Terminal (Goto Mall) — one of the largest underground shopping arcades in the city, connected directly to a major subway interchange, strong for affordable fashion.
- Gangnam Station underground arcade — a dense, long underground shopping corridor running beneath one of Seoul's busiest stations.
- Euljiro/Myeongdong underground passages — smaller in scale but convenient if you're already shopping the surface-level streets above.
Should you bother
Worth it if you want budget-friendly fashion basics, phone accessories, and small gifts at prices generally lower than surface-level retail in the same neighborhoods — less worth it if you're after anything particularly curated or high-end, which is better served by the malls and department stores covered in our malls guide.
Tip: These arcades are genuinely easy to get turned around in — note which numbered exit you came in from so you can find your way back to the right subway platform.
