Best Day Trips from Seoul (Including the DMZ)

Seoul is compact enough to see in a few days, which makes it worth carving out at least one day for something outside the city entirely.

The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)

The border zone between North and South Korea is one of the most distinctive day trips available from any capital city in the world — a heavily fortified, largely undeveloped strip that's become an unlikely tourist site. Most visitors go via an organized tour (independent access is restricted), which typically covers an observatory, a tunnel dug by North Korea and later discovered, and sometimes a stop at a themed park or memorial site. Bring your passport — it's checked.

Good to know: DMZ tour access and specific sites open to visitors change based on the political situation, so book through a reputable operator and confirm what's currently included rather than assuming a fixed itinerary.

Nami Island

A small, crescent-shaped island on the Han River known for its tree-lined avenues, particularly a famous row of metasequoia trees that turn brilliant colors in autumn. It gained international fame partly through Korean drama filming locations and remains a popular half-day or full-day trip, especially in autumn and during cherry blossom season.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

A UNESCO World Heritage fortress city about an hour from Seoul, built in the late 18th century with an impressively intact wall you can walk almost the entire circuit of. Less crowded than the DMZ or Nami Island, and a good option if you want substantial history without an organized tour group.
