Start with Seoul Goods if you want a city-specific souvenir
Seoul now has an official merchandise line called Seoul Goods, built around the city's “Seoul My Soul” brand. Visit Seoul says the range launched in 2024 and is sold through Seoul My Soul Shops in major visitor areas including central Seoul and Yeouido. That makes it a useful first stop when I want something recognisably Seoul rather than a generic Korea-themed trinket.
The catalogue changes, so I do not recommend a particular mug or T-shirt as if it will exist forever. The point is the official channel: magnets, apparel and design collaborations rotate without needing a fake “must-buy” list.
For crafts, Insadong is still the easy answer
Insadong remains the most convenient district for traditional and contemporary Korean craft shopping. The current National Souvenir Center in Insadong sells selected Korean crafts and local specialties; Visit Korea lists ceramics, wooden crafts and other handicrafts, while Visit Seoul's Insadong guide points to galleries, tea houses and traditional-goods shopping across the neighbourhood.
I would look for small ceramics, hanji paper goods, textile items or modern products using traditional motifs. For fragile ceramics, I ask how the shop packs for flights before falling in love with the heaviest bowl in the room.
Food gifts work best when they survive the flight
Packaged tea, sweets, snacks, seaweed, instant noodles and shelf-stable specialty foods are easy gifts because they do not demand much suitcase space. Department-store food halls are useful when I want polished gift packaging; supermarkets and convenience stores are better for everyday Korean snacks that friends may actually open instead of displaying.
I avoid casually packing fresh meat, fruit, plants or other restricted agricultural products. What may leave Korea is not automatically allowed into your destination country, so customs rules at home win over a souvenir recommendation.
Skincare: buy for a person, not for the hype
K-beauty shopping can be genuinely fun, especially around Myeongdong, but I would not claim every Korean product is cheaper or better than the same product overseas. I buy brands and formulas I understand, keep receipts for tax-refund purposes when relevant, and resist turning a suitcase into a laboratory of unfamiliar active ingredients.

K-pop merchandise: authenticity matters more than the neighbourhood
Albums, light sticks, photo books and artist merchandise are easy to find in Seoul. If authenticity matters, I prefer official agency shops, established album retailers or clearly branded pop-ups over anonymous street stalls. Limited events move around constantly, so I check the artist or retailer's current channel rather than following a two-year-old “best K-pop shop” map.
Tourist tax refunds: know the current thresholds
Visit Seoul's current tax-refund guidance says eligible foreign tourists can claim refunds on qualifying purchases from participating tax-free stores. The published minimum purchase is KRW 15,000, and goods generally need to be purchased within three months of departure. Eligibility also depends on visitor status and length of stay.
Immediate refunds have their own transaction and trip-total limits. I treat the store's tax-free signage and the current Visit Seoul instructions as authoritative because thresholds and procedures can change. A refund is a bonus, not a reason to buy something I did not want.
