Hongdae: Indie Music, Street Art, and Cafe Culture

Named for Hongik University, Hongdae is where Seoul's art-school energy lives — street performances, indie music venues, and a cafe on every corner.

What makes it different

Hongdae is younger, cheaper, and scrappier than Gangnam, with an identity built around Hongik University's fine arts program. Street art, small independent boutiques, and a rotating cast of buskers and street performers give it a genuinely lived-in creative energy rather than a curated one.

What to actually do here

Nightlife

Hongdae is one of Seoul's two major nightlife hubs (alongside Gangnam), but with a younger, more alternative crowd — clubs here lean electronic and hip-hop, and the street drinking culture around convenience stores is part of the scene, not incidental to it.

Should you stay here

Good for younger travelers, music and arts fans, and anyone who wants nightlife within walking distance of their hotel. It's on Line 2 and Airport Railroad (AREX), which also makes it a genuinely convenient base if you're arriving from Incheon with an early or late flight.

Tip: Hongdae is loudest Friday and Saturday nights. If you want to see the neighborhood's creative side without the crowd, visit on a weekday afternoon.
