What makes it different

- Hongdae Free Market — a weekend market (typically Saturdays in warmer months) selling handmade crafts and art directly from student and local makers.
- Live music clubs — Hongdae has Seoul's densest cluster of small indie venues, from rock to hip-hop to electronic.
- Themed cafes — one of the best places in the city to find genuinely unusual concept cafes, alongside serious specialty coffee shops.
- Street art and murals — wander the side streets north of the main strip for the best of it, away from the busiest thoroughfare.
Nightlife
Hongdae is one of Seoul's two major nightlife hubs (alongside Gangnam), but with a younger, more alternative crowd — clubs here lean electronic and hip-hop, and the street drinking culture around convenience stores is part of the scene, not incidental to it.

Good for younger travelers, music and arts fans, and anyone who wants nightlife within walking distance of their hotel. It's on Line 2 and Airport Railroad (AREX), which also makes it a genuinely convenient base if you're arriving from Incheon with an early or late flight.
