Cheonggyecheon Stream: A Restored Urban Waterway Walk

A restored stream running below street level through the middle of Seoul, Cheonggyecheon turned a covered highway back into one of the city's most pleasant free walks.

What it actually is

Cheonggyecheon was once a stream buried beneath an elevated highway, restored in the mid-2000s into a landscaped, walkable waterway running for several kilometers through central Seoul, from near City Hall out toward Dongdaemun. It sits below street level, giving it a genuinely calm, separated feeling from the traffic and density directly above.

What to actually do here

Should you visit

Yes — it costs nothing, requires no advance planning, and works as a connector between other things you're already doing rather than a dedicated destination. A good low-effort addition to a Jongno or Dongdaemun day.
