What it actually is
Cheonggyecheon was once a stream buried beneath an elevated highway, restored in the mid-2000s into a landscaped, walkable waterway running for several kilometers through central Seoul, from near City Hall out toward Dongdaemun. It sits below street level, giving it a genuinely calm, separated feeling from the traffic and density directly above.
What to actually do here
- Walk any stretch of it — you don't need to do the whole length; even a 20–30 minute segment gives a real sense of it.
- Combine it with a City Hall or Dongdaemun visit — the stream conveniently connects two areas already worth visiting; see our Dongdaemun guide.
- Evening lighting displays — sections are illuminated at night, and seasonal lantern festivals are sometimes staged along the stream.
- Stepping stones — several points let you cross via stones set into the shallow water, a small but popular photo moment.
Should you visit
Yes — it costs nothing, requires no advance planning, and works as a connector between other things you're already doing rather than a dedicated destination. A good low-effort addition to a Jongno or Dongdaemun day.
