Budget Stays in Seoul: Hostels and Guesthouses

Seoul has a genuinely strong budget accommodation scene, especially in Hongdae and Myeongdong — here's how to pick well.

Where budget stays cluster

Hongdae has the highest density of hostels in the city, largely aimed at younger travelers and backpackers, with easy nightlife access baked in. Myeongdong runs a close second, trading some of Hongdae's social atmosphere for more central location and easier access to palaces and shopping. Smaller guesthouse clusters also exist around Itaewon and near Seoul Station.

What separates a good hostel from a mediocre one

Guesthouses as a middle option

Small, independently run guesthouses sit between hostels and hotels — usually private rooms at a lower price than a hotel, sometimes with shared bathrooms, and often run by owners who are genuinely helpful with local recommendations in a way a large hotel typically isn't.

Tip: Solo travelers should specifically check whether dorms are mixed-gender or gender-separated if that matters to their comfort — this varies by property and isn't always obvious from the main listing.
