Busan: the second city, coastal and different in character
Korea's second-largest city, Busan sits on the southeast coast and offers a genuinely different feel from Seoul — beaches, a major port city atmosphere, mountains dropping directly into the sea, and a slower pace than the capital. Reachable from Seoul via KTX high-speed train in roughly two and a half hours, making it a realistic add for trips of 5+ days without an internal flight.
Jeju: the island, nature-focused
A volcanic island off Korea's south coast, Jeju is the country's main nature and outdoor-recreation destination — hiking (including Hallasan, Korea's highest peak), beaches, waterfalls, and a subtropical feel distinct from anywhere on the mainland. Reachable only by a roughly one-hour flight from Seoul (no train or bridge connection), which makes it more of a dedicated multi-day addition than a quick side trip.
How to actually decide
| If you want... | Add this |
|---|---|
| A different city vibe, reachable by train, without an extra flight | Busan |
| Nature, hiking, and beaches, and don't mind a short flight | Jeju |
| Neither — you'd rather go deeper into Seoul itself | Stay and use the extra days for Seoul's own day trips |
Realistic time budgeting
Busan is workable as a 2-day add-on given the fast train connection, though 3 days lets you actually relax into it. Jeju genuinely benefits from 3+ days given the flight commitment on both ends and the island's spread-out attractions — a rushed 1-day Jeju trip tends to feel like a waste of the travel time involved.
