Seodaemun district takes its name from one of Seoul's historic city gates, and today combines Seodaemun Prison History Hall — a former colonial-era prison used to detain Korean independence activists, now preserved as a museum — with a lively, youthful district shaped by its proximity to Yonsei and Ewha universities (see our Sinchon guide for the university district itself).
What to actually do here
- Seodaemun Prison History Hall — a genuinely sobering, well-curated site covering Korea's independence movement and colonial-era history; not a casual visit, but an important one.
- Independence Park — the green space surrounding the history hall, with monuments to the independence movement.
- Ansan Mountain trails — a smaller, more accessible mountain than Bukhansan, with an unusual "healing forest" trail and city views without the crowds of Namsan.
Should you visit
Worth building in if you want a fuller picture of Korea's modern history beyond the Joseon-era palaces — the colonial period and independence movement covered here are a significant, sometimes overlooked part of understanding the country. Combine it with a Sinchon university-district visit for a fuller day in the area.
Good to know: Seodaemun Prison History Hall covers genuinely difficult material (imprisonment, interrogation, colonial-era violence) — it's a valuable visit, but go in expecting a somber tone rather than a casual sightseeing stop.
