What makes it worth knowing about
Mangwon sits just west of Hongdae along the Han River, and has become one of the neighborhoods locals point to when asked "where's still authentic but getting good." Mangwon Market remains a genuinely local traditional market (less curated for visitors than Gwangjang), while the streets around it have filled in with independent cafes and small restaurants over the past several years.
What to actually do here
- Mangwon Market — a traditional market well regarded for street food, particularly a strong reputation for hotteok and other fried snacks; less visited by tourists than the city's headline markets.
- Han River Park (Mangwon section) — direct, easy access to the river with noticeably fewer crowds than the Yeouido or Banpo sections; see our Han River parks guide.
- Independent cafes — a growing, less-discovered version of Seongsu-dong's cafe scene, with more residential character.
Should you visit
A good pick if you've already covered the headline neighborhoods and want a genuinely more local, less obviously-touristy afternoon — easily combined with Hongdae given the short distance between them.
