Dongdaemun: Markets, Malls, and a Design Landmark

Part market district, part late-night fashion wholesale hub, part architectural landmark — Dongdaemun is one of the harder Seoul neighborhoods to sum up in one sentence.

What's actually here

Dongdaemun ("East Gate," named for a historic city gate still standing at the district's edge) combines Seoul's oldest traditional market (see our markets guide for Namdaemun and Gwangjang), a cluster of towering fashion wholesale malls that operate deep into the night, and the Zaha Hadid-designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) — a striking, curved landmark building used for exhibitions, markets, and events.

What to actually do here

Should you visit

Worth a visit for the DDP alone, and a strong option if you specifically want to shop late at night. It's less essential if fashion wholesale shopping isn't a priority — the immediate area is more functional than charming outside of the DDP grounds.
